Now and Then
DAY TEN // put your music player on shuffle and write the first ten songs that play
The original prompt was "a photo of your favorite place to eat", but I don't eat out much, so I didn't like that one. So I turned to Pinterest for other 30-day Blogging Challenges to find a day ten prompt that I liked, and I thought this one would be fun.
I'm going to do two lists - one with my current tastes in music and one from my old iPod, which hasn't been updated in for.ev.er. That second one should be entertaining.
So for the first list we have:
1. Thirst by City and Colour
2. For Emma by Bon Iver
3. Living Color by The Paper Kites
4. Sundown (Back in the Briars) by Iron & Wine
5. Holocene by Bon Iver
6. Big Parade by The Lumineers
7. Cinders and Smoke by Iron & Wine
8. Ladies and Gentlemen by City and Colour
9. Byegone by Volcano Choir
10. Videotape by Radiohead
And now for the throwback.
1. Workin' It Out by Hilary Duff
2. Sinkin' In by Cody Simpson
3. Out of Thin Air from Aladdin and the King of Thieves
4. Linger by The Cranberries
5. Jesus, Take the Wheel by Carrie Underwood
6. Never Say Never by Justin Bieber
7. Broken Vow by Josh Groban
8. A Hard Day's Night by The Beatles
9. East Northumberland High by Miley Cyrus
10. If This Was A Movie by Taylor Swift
Oh, how my tastes have changed. I still love old Miley though.

DAY NINE // a photo of the item you last purchased
When I looked at this prompt last night, I thought it was just perfect, because I was planning a trip to Salvation Army today to see if I could find anything to help with organizing my room when I move out. This was supposed to be a fun thrifting haul post.
I did go - but there was nothing. I didn't even find anything when I looked through clothes. Overall a very disappointing trip.
So that makes my Macbook Pro the last thing I bought.
Let's talk for a second about how I've hated Macs all my life.
I've always really hated Macs.
And I tried really hard to find a way out of getting one, but it ended up being the only sensible choice. All of my graphic design labs this semester are Mac based. So here I am, with my fancy schmancy 15" Retina display Macbook Pro, that cost the equivalent of like 5 months of work.
Don't tell anyone, but I kinda love it.

Your New Favorite Songs
DAY SEVEN // your five favorite songs
It's so difficult to choose favorites with songs. But here it goes -
#1) Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing
Post about my love for this song - which started when it was performed at my grandmother's funeral when I was very little - here.
#2) O Holy Night
I listen to this song all year long. It's too good to be restricted to just the Christmas season.
#3) A Maker of My Time
Also pretty much every other song by the Paper Kites. They're a bit of an obsession right now.
#4) Hey Pretty Girl
This may very well be the cutest country song ever sung (a close second right now would be I Don't Dance by Lee Brice ). Well done, Kip Moore.
#5) Biodh An Deoch Seo 'n Laimh Mo Ruin
I will forever have an affinity for traditional Gaelic music. Julie Fowlis is, hands down, my favorite Gaelic artist.
And there we go. Listen and love. You're welcome.

DAY FIVE // a photo of yourself two years ago
Two years ago, I spend a night at a bridal boutique with a couple of friends, trying on wedding gowns. Because why not?

This Dress Is Not a Muumuu
| cardi: hand-me-down // dress: thrifted // belt: f21 shoes: target |
I kind of love this dress.
It has about as much shape as a paper bag, and the material bunches up awkwardly when I stick a belt on it, but that embroidery...I die. The embroidery makes it all worth it.
In other news, I've made the important decision that when I have my own house, I will never have plants in it - real or fake. Dusting hundreds of individual fake leaves yesterday put me off houseplants forever.

Addicted Lately
My boards were rapidly growing for a few weeks...and then they were rapidly shrinking....and now I'm going crazy again.
Two reasons for the shrinking:
1 // When I'm in a pinning frenzy, I pin a lot of stuff that I'm not actually as
crazy about the next day as I am in the moment.
2 // I read an post called Blogger Beware: You CAN Get Sued For Using Photos
You Don't Own on Your Blog. Now I'm paranoid. And concerned with doing the right thing,
but mainly paranoid. So I'm going through my Pinterest boards making sure everything is linked
to the original source, and I'm obeying their copyright laws...and I did that before I changed all the
pictures on my blog because it seemed less overwhelming. But now that I actually think about it, I
only have 150-ish posts, but hundreds of pins...so I don't know where that reasoning came from. I
guess I'll start with the blog before I do any more pins...silly me.
COUNTRY.
Looove it. 'Nuff said.
READING.
I've had to start reading for school rather than my own entertainment, but that's better than nothing.
SLEEPING.
I do it too much. I don't do it enough. It's really becoming an issue.
For example: The other day, I needed to read a chapter in my history text book. So I sat down at 8:00 pm and read a page...and woke up at 10:00 pm. I really had to read that chapter, so I woke up way early the next morning. I sat down at about 4:20 am and read a page...and woke up at 6:15 am. I never did read that chapter.
CHAMBRAY.
Fool-proof for any occasion
SLEGGINGS.
They're not jeans, because they're too stretchy. They're not leggings, because the material is too substantial. They're not jeggings, because they don't resemble jeans at all, in appearance or texture. They're kind of just really stretchy slacks....so I dub them sleggings. And I love them.
DOCTOR WHO.
I'm new to this, but I'm thoroughly obsessed. Not to mention extremely upset that Christopher Eccleston only got one season.
Anyone else "suffering" from any rather pleasant addictions?

My Thoughts on Tutorials
I've always (as in, since I started this blog last April) thought it would be really cool to be one of those super-crafty bloggers with loads of amazing tutorials and recipes that everyone loves.
Let me explain my relationship with tutorials:
Using them: I really only look at the pictures in tutorials. If there are no pictures (or fill-in-the-blank templates when it's dealing with HTML stuff for blogging) it's a no-go. Call it laziness, but that's just how it is. I go about the project, whatever it is, based on the pictures and a quick scan of the page.
Good: This approach let's me be uber-creative with it. Bad: "Uber-creative" doesn't always turn out so well if I'm supposed to be following specific instructions.
With recipes...I'm just super-talented and I manage to get something wrong regardless of how closely I follow the directions. But then I just add extra flour and everything fixes itself.
Making them: I only give the bare bones details, according to how I went through it. Which was probably the easiest way possible. I'm also prone to use "thingamajig" or "whatchamacallit" in my description.
The verdict: tutorials aren't very me. I'm really glad I've found my place as a "lifestyle" rather than "crafty" blogger - better for you and me both!
What kind of blogger did you start off thinking you would be? Has that changed over time?

It's About Time
You know how they say that when you're learning a language, and you start to dream or think in that language, that means that you're becoming fluent?
I dreamed in blog posts the other night.
I must be becoming fluent.

The Liebster Award ... second edition
I was nominated for the Liebster Award by Jess from Black and White with a Little Bit of Pink!
This is how the award works. Each person awarded must:
+ post 11 things about themselves {whoops. Didn't know about that one last time}
+ Answer the 11 questions provided for them
+ Create 11 more questions for their nominees
+ Spread the bloggy love! Nominate up to 11 more
bloggers with under 200 followers
First things first - 11 things about me. I'll try to make them interesting...
#1) The number of exclamation points matters. One is good. If it's super exciting and more are necessary, then three or more are fabulous - but never only two. It seriously drives me crazy when there are only two exclamation points. That's probably one of the most arbitrary pet peeves ever.
#2) Everything in my room has a specific order. Clothes, nail polish, sharpies, highlighters - rainbow color order. Books, CDs - alphabetically. School assignments, letters, memory box - chronologically. Sheet music, stationary - by occasion. And so on...
#3) I can't actually pop my fingers...but I go through the motions anyway, when I'm nervous. Or bored.
#4) Some of my fingers are double-jointed. See that finger up there? Back in ... seventh grade, I think, all of my friend were double jointed and they could do that with all of their fingers, but I couldn't. I was insanely jealous...and then one day I was just sitting on my bed reading (I even remember what I was reading -Anne of Avonlea by L.M. Montgomery. That's how momentous this was for me!) and moving my fingers without really thinking about it, and all of a sudden I looked at my hand and lo and behold, my finger was doing that! I seriously got up and danced around my room to celebrate. Now I can do that with both of my middle fingers and my left ring finger.
#5) When I'm concentrating really hard, I stick out my tongue. It doesn't matter what I'm doing - if I'm not also concentrating on keeping my tongue in my mouth, out it goes.
#6) Speaking of tongues...I can touch my nose with my tongue. Sometimes I just can't believe how amazing I am.
#7) I've kept a journal consistently since I was in 3rd grade. I have a drawer full of them now, and I'm still going. So if someone doesn't know what to get me as a gift...a journal is always a safe bet. That, or socks. I love socks.
#8) I cry, like, all the time. When I'm happy, when I'm sad, when I'm proud, when they recognize veterans, when I hear a really beautiful piece of music or see a gorgeous painting...I can usually stop myself from full-on crying, but I get teary-eyed. It's kind of ridiculous.
#9) I'm kind of vain about my handwriting. I think it's really pretty.
#10) I say "like" way too much. I don't even think about it...then this guy from Germany mentioned it and for the rest of that conversation it bugged me whenever I said it, but I couldn't stop! No worries, though, I've gone back to blissfully not noticing when I say it.
#11) Once upon a time, I had a poem I wrote published in a magazine. It was a super-ghetto magazine, but still. I had sent the poem to four or five literary magazines that published works from teenagers, and I was pretty excited when I actually heard back from one.
And now for the questions - and Jess came up with some rather interesting ones....
#1) WHY the heck do you blog?? I mean seriously, what's the point? When I've gotten out of the blogging mood, I ask myself the same thing. And I think when I'm out of the mood, there really is no point. As much as I love my readers, I blog for me. I blog to be inspired, and hopefully to inspire. I want to be inspired to be grateful, to be happy, to forgive, to have fun, to be better.
#2) What is your current favorite song and why? Why does it move you? Or is it the kind of song that just makes you dance in the middle of the grocery store? I have one reigning favorite song that I would choose if every song but one had to be destroyed - Come Thou Font. You can read more about that in this post. But I'd say my current favorite song is Would You Go With Me by Josh Turner. Mainly because it's a cute song, and I love his deep voice. I've got a slight obsession with Julie Fowlis's Biodh An Deoch Seo 'n Laimh Mo Ruin, too. I love Gaelic...
#3) Dream BIG: What is your dream(s)/aspiration(s)? Spill it! I've got a billion of them...I'd love to own a used book store someday. Once I've got some more experience under my belt, I want to start a little graphic design business {with prints and blog designs and such} connected with the blog. I want to be a mother more than anything, once I've married my prince charming. Seven or eight kids sounds nice {don't bother telling me I won't really want that many once I've had the first two. I hear that often enough}. I'm going to run a marathon. I want to jump off a waterfall. Someday I'll go to a Taylor Swift or Keith Urban concert. I'm going to serve a mission. I want to have an adventure. Oh, and I want to be perfect eventually...
#4) Share one of your top embarrassing moments please! I think I tend to repress my embarrassing moments. Or I start thinking they're so hilarious that I can't even remember being embarrassed about them. Let's see...once I was dancing with a guy and he was, like, refusing to help the conversation along...It went something like this:
me: My name's Niamh!
him: I'm [insert name here]
me: So where are you from?
him: [one word answer]
pause
me: What do you do there?
him: [short answer]
pause
me: Cool! I'm Niamh!
pause
me: Oh...wait...um...haha...

#5) How often do you shower during the week? I shower daily - and even though I know you're not supposed to, I wash my hair daily, too. I'm not willing to invest in dry shampoo at this point, and I think feeling clean wins over having uber-healthy hair. I haven't noticed any bad side-effects, anyway. Maybe I'll regret it one day, but for now I'll be enjoying my clean, grease-free hair!
#6) Favorite blog you're currently reading? First of all - I LOVE all the blogs I follow, and they all inspire me, or I wouldn't be following them. I have a strict "will-not-follow-unless-I-love-it" policy in regards to that...which is why I don't win many giveaways, I suppose. But if I had to choose just one favorite, I'd say Elise's Pieces. This was one of the first blogs I started following, and ever since then every post I've read has been kind of perfect for me at the moment I read it...it's kind of strange, actually. But mostly awesome!
#7) What is your favorite thing about yourself? Physically, I love my eyes. Non-physically, I like how if I decide I really want to change something, I will get it done.
#8) Do you fart in public or private? In the blankets or in the bathroom? Embarrassing or hilarious? Oookay, Jess...what kind of question is this? If I get this award again, I'm nominating you and making this one of the questions! Um, private, bathroom, embarrassing. Done.
#9) What wonderful piece of advice/information would you share with yourself 10 years ago?
It wasn't your fault.
#10) Vodka or tequila? Mixed or in a shot? Or do you prefer club soda? Well, I don't drink, and I don't ever plan on doing so, so I'll take the club soda, thank you! I'd love to have a mock-tail party sometime, though...
#11) What is the greatest encouragement you have received from your journey through the bloggy world? What encouragement would you offer a fellow blogger who is struggling?
Getting comments is the hugest encouragement ever. They really make my day. If a fellow blogger was struggling...I guess I would tell them to think about why they were blogging. I really think blogging should be for your own benefit, first and foremost. If you keep writing about stuff you care about, recognition will come-people will be drawn to your sincerity.
My questions are...
#1) What is your favorite piece of artwork/decoration in your room/house?
#2) Item of clothing you couldn't live without?
#3) Fashion trend you fell in love with in 2012?
#4) What's your favorite kind of exercise?
#5) When you're feeling a bit blue, what do you do to get your spirits up?
#6) What are you wearing right now?
#7) If you could change your name, what would you change it to?
#8) If you were stranded on a deserted island, what three people would you want there with you?
#9) When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?
#10) What's a song that brings back special memories?
#11) Think fast - two truths and a lie! {I'll guess in the comments}
My wonderful nominees are

High FIVE for Friday!
It's Friday. Well, that came out of nowhere.
My last weekday out of classes...sigh.
But don't worry - I'll be living it up {by window shopping at the mall}.
Meanwhile, here are my top 5 from this week!

#1) I saw The Hobbit! I've never been a Lord of the Rings fan {I've only read the books...and to be honest, they bored me to death. Don't get me wrong, it's gorgeous writing, just...so much of it seemed arbitrary. The last book in the trilogy was the only one that I really enjoyed}, but I did like The Hobbit as a book, and I'd say they did pretty well making it into a movie.
#2) Strawberry lemon sorbet frozen yogurt topped with pineapple...I die.
#3) It's 2013! I spent New Year's Eve with some of my favorite people, and started off 2013 with an early breakfast of waffles topped with ice cream.
#4) I finally got my new header {courtesy of Shaina from Shadylane - check her out!} up! I'll still be tweaking the rest of the design for a while, but it feels good to practically have one of 2013's goals crossed off already!
#5) I went to a super-exciting baptism that everybody's been waiting for forever on Tuesday! And then proceeded to get miserably lost on the way home...but that's just me. Perpetually lost.
And that is just a bit of my pretty darn awesome week.
I definitely finished off my winter break well!

I spent a night at a local bridal/formal boutique trying on wedding and formal dresses.
The boutique is called "Celestial Bridal & Prom", and it's pretty much the cutest thing ever. The best part is,
every. single. dress.
was completely modest!

buy altered - I'm not busty or waist-y enough for anything that fits my hips!
Every dress I tried on had to be clipped up in the back to make it fit.

Celestial was the cutest little place, with great intimate settings, and the owner, Shelby Coleman, was super sweet and helpful, even though we were just there for fun. And I swear she has this gift for being able to sense what people will like - I'd come out of the changing room to take pictures, and she'd have another dress picked out that she thought would be perfect for me, and I loved all of them!
This was the most fun night I've had in a while - and I felt like a princess the whole time!
What are your favorite dress styles - wedding or otherwise?
Anyone else as crazy about the trains and veils as I am?

Why, Starbucks? Why?
Why must you include coffee in so many of your drinks? I know you're a coffeehouse, but still. And why, why, WHY is there COFFEE {or espresso, or mocha, or whatever - something that contains more caffeine than I ever wanted to consume} in your hot chocolate?
And in your salted caramel hot chocolate?
AND in your peppermint hot chocolate?
You could've at least warned me about that before I discovered that I liked them. And don't even try to tell me that I should have assumed they were safe. Who puts that much caffeine {90 mg, which is nothing compared to straight coffee, but it's still more than I want!} in a generally Niamh-friendly beverage?
But I know better now! Never again will I trust a drink unless I've thoroughly researched it!
The plus side of this is that I did go and thoroughly research every other not-obviously-caffeinated drink at Starbucks, and I now have a Mormon-friendly Starbucks Bucket List!

{there were a couple more that I could have included in this list, but they sounded yucky to me. I'm pretty sure one involved coconut...blech}
If Starbucks has still somehow managed to slip caffeine into these drinks undetected,
someone please let me know before I try them!
Also, someone told me that if you have them add a creme base to pretty much anything, that makes it caffeine-free. True or False?
P.S. I'm grateful for
+ a three-day weekend! Thank gooseness!
+ when Blogger behaves
+ this amazing cold weather! I've been piling on the
blankets these past few nights...and days :)

The Liebster Award
Now that it's been a week {or something...I'm to lazy to actually check} since Jen gave me the award, here's the post you've been waiting for!
{See here for an explanation of the award}
#1) Who/what inspired you to create your blog?
{See here for an explanation of the award}
#1) Who/what inspired you to create your blog?
I was a blog stalker long before I was a blogger. The first blogger that ever made me want to become a blogger was Brittney from A Day in the Life Too.... Her posts always made me laugh, and I loved her style. I was super bummed when she retired from this blog. Something silly about taking care of her newborn baby...pshaw.
{Note: I just found her family blog, A Day in the Life..., which she still blogs at, and will now happily continue stalking her. Took me long enough to find it...I'm such a bad stalker}

#2) How did you come up with your blog name?
Coming up with the blog name was the hardest part. I really wanted to come up with one of those super cute, catchy names, but I was stumped. I decided on Finding the Joys in My Journey because that's what I'm trying to do right now, and I figured that was probably what I'd be blogging about, so it seemed appropriate. To be honest, though, I see a name change some time in the future...

#3) What is your favorite food and/or drink?
I love anything with shrimp in it.

#4) What's your hidden talent?
I don't think I have any! As much as I'd like some of them to be hidden {ahem, piano and organ},I'm pretty sure all my talents are out in the open. Ummm...I can play "Hot Cross Buns" on the trumpet?

#5) If you could choose one vacation spot in the entire world, where would you go and why?
IrelandIrelandIRELAND! I'm madly in love with the language, the culture, the geography...take me there? I already know a bit of Irish Gaelic, but it's a dream of mine to live there for a while and just absorb myself in the language.

#6) What's the weirdest or most exotic thing you've ever eaten?
You have no clue how happy I am that this was one of the questions! I love telling people about this...The weirdest thing I've ever eaten is a live cricket.
Yes folks, you heard correctly: a live cricket.
Getting it in my mouth was the hardest part - it kept trying to hop away. After that, it was fine...'cause, you know, after you bite down, it's dead.
There were the really sour guts, but besides that, it wasn't so bad. Except for the fact that back when I did this, I had braces...and I found the remnants of a leg stuck in them later.
Have I grossed you out enough? I swear, I'm not really a disgusting person. I just make strange decisions when I've been camping with a bunch of friends for a week.
#7) Which is the color that best describes you or stands for your personality?
I really didn't know how to answer this, so I turned to some online quizzes. One said blue, another said light yellow, and the rest wanted me to give them my personal information before they sent me the answers. I'm going to go with blue. Personally, I like yellow better, but blue fits my personality with the way it changes and all of its shades.
#8) Would you rather be blind, deaf, or mute?
Mute. 100%, without a doubt, mute.
I'd be miserable if I couldn't see the world, especially since I'm awful at visualizing things in my head.
I'd rather die {okay, so that's a bit over-dramatic} than never be able to hear music, or a waterfall, or my family's voices again.
I've discovered that I can literally go hours without talking, and there are other ways of communication anyway, so I'd definitely choose being mute.
#9) What's your current outfit?
Ummmm...this is embarrassing.
It's been a tiring enough week {yes, I do realize that it's only Tuesday} that I'm in my pajamas.
A.K.A. A shirt from elementary school that I still fit in {crazy, right?!} and a pair of pretty trashy basketball shorts. And, for the icing on the cake, my hair is wet. A few seconds ago it was wrapped up in a towel.
Isn't that a lovely picture?

And now, the people that I'm giving the award to:
My questions:
#1) If you were given the opportunity to live forever, would you take it?
#2) What is an everyday object that brings back memories?
#3) Would you rather be "dazzlingly clever, angelically good, or divinely beautiful?"
{if you got the reference, kudos to you! say it in your answer!}

#4) What is the most trouble you ever got in as a kid?
#5) Out of all the classes you've ever taken, which was your favorite?
#6) Who's your celebrity look-alike?
#7) You know those jokes that make you laugh every time, regardless of how dumb they are? What's your favorite?
#8) What's your favorite pick-up line? What's the worst?
#9) Quick! Two truths and a lie! {I'll guess...but you have to tell me if I'm right}

If the question could be answered by only a 'yes' or 'no', or something simple like that, still elaborate. I want to get to know you!
Get to it, ladies! When you've done it, leave a link to your post in the comments, or shoot me an e-mail. I can't wait to hear your answers!

YES!
Ahhh! Dream come true! Right after I discover Mikarose for the first time, there are not one, but two giveaways from them on blogs I follow!
This is definitely a sign that I'm meant to win one of them.
Check it out at Whispering Sweet Nothings!
But...uh, feel free not to enter to give me a better chance of winning.
Kidding!
Kind of.
